Dimitris Charalambis is Professor emeritus for Political Science at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, School of Economics and Political Sciences, Department of Communication and Media Studies and President of the Hellenic Political Science Association (HPSA).
He studied Political Science, Sociology and Philosophy at the University of Freiburg in Germany and has a PhD of the University of Muenster in Germany on Political Sociology (summa cum laude, Excellence-Award of the University of Muenster in the Humanities 1980). After a post Doc Diss. in the University of Freiburg he worked as researcher in the Centre for Mediterranean Studies in Athens.
Between 1985 and 1990 he was elected Assistant Professor in the Panteion University in Athens and since 1990, first associate Professor and then (1998) full Professor at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, in which he teaches since 2019 as Professor Emeritus.
Between 1994 and 2002 he was elected Director of the Institute of Political Sociology at the National Center for Social Research (EKKE). 2002 and until 2008 he was appointed Vice-President of The National Broadcasting Authority (ESR) through unanimous decision of the Greek Parliament.
He was President of the Department of Communication and Media Studies (2014-2016) and between 2004 and 2018 Deputy Director of the University Institute for Applied Communication (EPIEE). He was visiting Professor at the University of Vienna and at the University of Economics in Athens, Professor at the Greek National School of Judges in Thessaloniki and Professor at the National School of Public Administration and at various Higher Schools of the Greek Navy and Army.
Professor Charalambis is the author and editor of several books in Greek, German and English and of more than 50 scientific articles on political theory, comparative politics, theory of Democracy, nationalism and globalization,
European integration and crisis, social change, identity politics, traditional and digital media and Democracy, the Greek political system etc. published in Greek and foreign reviews and readers. He also was speaker in more than 80 national and international symposia and congresses and was invited for lectures at Universities in Europe, the United States, China and North Africa. Professor Charalambis was, between 1995 and 2010, coordinator of 17 European and National Research Projects in the National Centre for Social Research (EKKE) and between 1998 and 2021, partner in 7 Leonardo Da Vinci and Grundtvig European Projects.
