Bits, trees and education: a balancing act between AI and sustainability in social discourse

Tília Stingl

How sustainable isartificial intelligence (AI)?

What contribution can AI make to minimizing our ecological footprint?

The role of education – at the very latest since the introduction of digitalization and generative AI into the classroom – is not only about acquiring knowledge, but also about acquiring competencies and thus the ability to take responsibility for one’s own decisions.

Central to this is the understanding of competence as a combination of skill, ability, capability, and a sense of responsibility, which are necessary to master the complex challenges of our time. Just like the masters of chess, who play the whole board and not just the strongest pieces, our society will increasingly have to learn to deal with contexts, interrelations, and strategic considerations.
